HPMC Application Guide and Safety Specifications

Core Characteristics and Application Fields

HPMC is a non-ionic cellulose ether with thickening, water retention, film-forming and other properties. It is widely used in four major fields:

Building materials: Improving water retention and crack resistance in cement mortar/putty powder, enhancing bonding strength of tile adhesive, optimizing flow control of self-leveling mortar

Pharmaceutical preparations: Tablet coating sustained-release carrier, plant capsule raw material, artificial tear matrix

Food processing: baked product structure improver, dairy beverage thickener, low-fat food fat substitute

Daily chemical products: skin care moisturizing enhancer, toiletries foam stabilizer, toothpaste anti-drying agent

Key usage restrictions

(1) Temperature sensitivity: Thermal decomposition occurs when the continuous working temperature is greater than 200°C, and it is prohibited to be used for durable High-temperature coatings and foods that require high-temperature processing

(2) Acid-base tolerance: When the pH value exceeds the range of 3-11, it is easy to hydrolyze and become ineffective. It is not suitable for industrial products with strong acid/strong base matrices

(3) Medical contraindications: It cannot be used for implantable devices (such as bone repair materials) and injectable preparations in the body. There is a risk of colloid blockage

(4) Regulatory restrictions: Organic foods/special infant formula foods must comply with local regulations, and synthetic thickeners are partially prohibited

Safe application principles

Industrial field: Match the system pH value and control the processing temperature gradient

Food and medicine: Select the corresponding purity grade (industrial grade/food grade/pharmaceutical grade)

Preparation process: It is recommended to add gradient after pre-dispersion to avoid agglomeration

Storage requirements: Sealed and moisture-proof, relative humidity ≤80%, avoid mixing with oxidants
