Application of RDP/VAE in tile adhesives

Redispersible latex powder (RDP) is a key functional additive in modern dry-mixed mortar systems, especially tile adhesives. It is an organic polymer powder obtained by spray drying process, which can be redispersed to form a stable emulsion when in contact with water, significantly improving the performance of mortar.

Mechanism of action of RDP in tile adhesives

As a polymer modifier, RDP improves the comprehensive performance of tile adhesives through the following mechanisms:

Enhance bonding strength: After RDP forms a film, it penetrates into the micropores of the substrate to form a mechanical anchor, and synergizes with cement hydration products to significantly improve the bonding force to tiles and base surfaces.

Improve flexibility and stress resistance: The formed polymer film has good flexibility and can effectively absorb the stress caused by thermal expansion and contraction or displacement of the substrate, reducing the risk of hollowing, cracking or falling off of tiles.

Optimize construction performance: RDP can extend the open time, improve the workability, lubricity and scraping feel of the mortar, and improve construction efficiency.

Improve crack resistance and impermeability: The polymer film fills the capillary pores of the mortar and reduces the porosity, thereby enhancing crack resistance and improving impermeability.

Enhanced durability and weather resistance: RDP improves the ability of the mortar system to resist erosion by environmental factors such as humidity, temperature changes, freeze-thaw cycles, and extends its service life.

The core advantage of RDP in tile adhesive

Excellent bonding strength: Applicable to all types of tiles (including low water absorption vitrified tiles, polished tiles) and a variety of substrates.

Excellent flexibility: Meets high-demand scenarios such as thin-layer construction, large-size tile paving and wall applications.

Excellent weather resistance and durability: Gives the product good water resistance, freeze-thaw resistance and aging resistance, adapting to different indoor and outdoor environments.

Comply with environmental standards: As a non-toxic and odorless material, it meets the requirements of green building materials.

Application points

Dosage range: The amount of RDP added needs to be adjusted according to the performance level of tile adhesive (such as C1 ordinary type, C2 high performance type, S1/S2 flexible type) and application requirements, usually within the range of 1.5% to 10% of the total amount of adhesive powder.

Applicability: RDP modified tile adhesive is widely used in various types of tiles such as glazed tiles, polished tiles, vitrified tiles, mosaics, natural stones, artificial stones, as well as common substrates such as cement mortar, concrete, cement board, gypsum board, and old tile surfaces. It can especially effectively solve the bonding problem of low water absorption tiles and large-sized tiles.

Precautions for use

Select the appropriate RDP type (such as EVA, acrylic, etc.) according to the performance goals (such as bonding strength, flexibility, and water resistance).

The product needs to be stored in dry conditions to prevent moisture and agglomeration.

Avoid long-term coexistence with strong alkaline substances.

Ensure uniform mixing during production and construction to ensure stable performance.

Conclusion

Redispersible latex powder is the core material for improving the performance of tile adhesives. It meets the needs of modern buildings for high-performance tile paving systems by enhancing adhesion, imparting flexibility, and improving workability and durability. Its application in the field of dry-mixed mortar will continue to promote the development of building materials technology towards higher performance and environmental protection.
