According to its application standards, it can be divided into construction grade, food grade, and pharmaceutical grade, with construction grade being the main product in China.
1. Main Uses of HPMC
In the construction field, HPMC is mainly used as a thickener and water-retaining agent in putty powder, accounting for about 90%; the remainder is used in cement mortar and adhesives. It is also commonly found in coatings, ceramics, textiles, agriculture, and cosmetics industries.
2. Types and Differences of HPMC
HPMC can be divided into instant-dispersible and hot-dispersible types.
Instant-dispersible type: Disperses rapidly in cold water, gradually forming a transparent viscous solution after about 2 minutes. Suitable for putty powder, mortar, liquid adhesives, and coatings.
Hot-dispersible type: Requires dispersion in hot water, forming a viscous colloid after cooling. Recommended only for putty powder and mortar; not suitable for liquid systems to avoid clumping.
3. Dissolving Methods for HPMC
Common dissolving methods include hot water dissolution and powder mixing:
Hot Water Dissolution: Slowly add HPMC to hot water at approximately 70°C, disperse it into a slurry, then add the remaining cold water, stir, and cool to dissolve.
Powder Mixing: First, evenly mix HPMC with other powder materials, then add water and stir. This effectively prevents clumping and is commonly used in dry mortar production.
